Once your Facebook Page or website starts getting regular orders, hand delivery and walking to the post office stop working. You need a courier service for online business in Bangladesh: a company that picks parcels up from you, delivers them to the customer's door, collects the cash on delivery, and pays you the money.

This guide explains what a courier merchant account is, how to open one, how to compare couriers fairly, and how to pack and hand over parcels so fewer of them come back.

What a courier merchant account is

A merchant account is a business account with a courier company. Instead of paying for each parcel at a counter like a regular customer, you book deliveries from the courier's merchant panel or app, and the courier settles everything with you later.

With a merchant account, the courier usually:

  • Picks up parcels from your home, shop or warehouse, or lets you drop them at a hub.
  • Delivers to the customer inside Dhaka, in other cities like Chattogram and Sylhet, and in districts outside the big cities.
  • Collects cash on delivery (COD) from the customer on your behalf.
  • Deducts its charges (delivery charge, COD charge, return charge) from the cash collected.
  • Pays out the balance to your bank account or mobile wallet such as bKash or Nagad.
  • Gives tracking so you and the customer can see where a parcel is.

For an f-commerce seller this is the backbone of the business. Your courier decides how fast customers get their order, how many parcels come back, and how quickly your money returns to you so you can buy new stock.

Several courier companies in Bangladesh focus on e-commerce and f-commerce sellers. Names sellers commonly mention include Steadfast, Pathao Courier, RedX, Paperfly, eCourier and Sundarban Courier (the last one is a traditional parcel courier with a large branch network). Each has its own merchant panel or app, coverage map, pricing and payout process.

We don't rank them here, for a simple reason: performance changes from area to area and from season to season. A courier that is excellent inside Dhaka may be slower in a particular upazila, and the opposite can be true for another. Rates and payout rules also change, so any price list in a blog post goes out of date quickly.

Instead, use the criteria in the next sections to compare the couriers that serve your customers, and test them with real parcels.

How to open a courier merchant account

The exact process differs between companies, but most follow similar steps. Always check the courier's official website or app for the current requirements.

  1. Go to the courier's merchant sign-up page or app. Most have a "Become a merchant" or "Sign up" option on their website or a merchant app on Google Play.
  2. Enter your business details. Typically your shop or Page name, owner name, mobile number, email, and the pickup address.
  3. Provide identity and business documents if asked. Many couriers ask for an NID. Some ask for a trade license or other business papers, especially for larger accounts. If you are planning to register your business, see trade license, DBID and e-TIN for online business.
  4. Add your payout method. A bank account or a mobile wallet account where the courier will send your COD money. Make sure the name matches your account details.
  5. Wait for verification. Some couriers activate accounts quickly; others call you to confirm details first.
  6. Set up pickup. Add your pickup location, choose pickup or drop-off, and learn the daily cut-off time for same-day pickup.
  7. Book a test parcel. Send one or two real orders to see how the process works before Eid or a big campaign.

Ask these questions before you commit:

  • What is the delivery charge inside Dhaka, in suburbs, and outside Dhaka, and how does it change with weight?
  • Is there a COD charge, and how is it calculated?
  • How much does a returned parcel cost, and how long does a return take to reach me?
  • How often do you pay out, and to which accounts?
  • What is the daily pickup cut-off time?
  • Who do I contact if a parcel is lost or damaged, and what is the claim process?
  • Do you have an API or plugin if I want to book from my website later?

How to compare courier services: a checklist table

Write down each courier's answers in a simple sheet. Compare them on the same points, using your own orders, not general reputation.

CriteriaWhat to checkWhy it matters
CoverageWhich districts and upazilas they deliver to, and whether they reach your customers' areasA courier is useless for orders it can't deliver
Delivery timeTypical days inside Dhaka, to divisional cities like Chattogram and Sylhet, and to remote districtsSlow delivery increases refused parcels
Delivery chargePrice by area and by weight, including extra for heavy or large parcelsDecides what you charge customers and your margin
COD chargeWhether there is a fee on collected cash and how it is calculatedEats into profit on every order
Payout speedHow often you get paid, minimum amount, bank or walletAffects your cash flow for buying stock
Return handlingReturn charge, number of delivery attempts, how fast returns come backReturns are the main hidden cost of COD
TrackingLive status for you and a tracking link for customersFewer "where is my order?" messages
PickupDaily pickup, cut-off time, drop-off pointsSame-day pickup means faster delivery

API and integrationsAPI, CSV bulk upload, plugins for website platformsSaves time once you ship many orders a day

Delivery time and coverage

Ask for typical delivery times by area, then measure your own. Note the date you hand over each parcel and the date it is delivered. After 30 to 50 parcels you will have a much clearer picture than any advertisement.

COD charge and delivery charge

These two costs together decide how much of each order you keep. Suppose a customer in Rajshahi orders a ৳1,200 kurti. If the courier charges a delivery fee plus a percentage-based COD charge on the collected amount, your actual income is ৳1,200 plus whatever delivery charge you collected from the customer, minus the courier's delivery and COD charges. Calculate this for every courier you consider, using their current rates.

Your own delivery charge to the customer should cover most of the courier cost. Our guide on setting delivery charges inside and outside Dhaka shows how to do this.

Payout speed

Payout speed matters more than many new sellers expect. If ৳50,000 of your money is sitting with the courier for days, you can't restock your best-selling items before Eid. Ask exactly how often they pay, whether there are any fees for faster payout, and how you can see which parcels are included in each payment.

Return handling

With cash on delivery, some customers will refuse parcels. Ask how many times the courier tries to deliver, whether the rider calls the customer, and how long it takes for a returned parcel to reach you. A slow return means stock is stuck and can't be sold to someone else.

Packaging tips that reduce damage and returns

Good packaging protects the product, looks professional and makes the courier's job easier.

  • Use the right size. A poly mailer for clothes, a box for anything fragile, cosmetics or gadgets. Too much empty space lets items move and break.
  • Protect fragile items. Bubble wrap for glass bottles, cosmetics and electronics. Seal liquids in a zip bag in case they leak.
  • Waterproof clothing parcels. A plastic layer inside protects sarees and kurtis from rain during monsoon.
  • Seal properly. Use strong tape, and consider branded tape or a sticker so tampering is visible.
  • Label clearly. Customer name, phone, full address and the COD amount, matching exactly what you entered in the merchant panel. Attach the courier's label if they give one.
  • Add an invoice or slip. Order number, items and total. It answers questions at the door and looks trustworthy.
  • Include a thank-you card. Add your website link or Facebook Page name, so the customer can order again easily.

Handover: getting parcels to the courier smoothly

A clean handover routine saves time every day and prevents mix-ups.

  1. Confirm orders first. Call or message customers for higher-value or first-time orders before you book.
  2. Book parcels in the merchant panel with the correct COD amount, phone number and address. Double-check the area, because a wrong area causes delays.
  3. Pack and label each parcel with the courier's tracking or consignment number.
  4. Hand over before the cut-off time so parcels go out the same day.
  5. Count parcels at pickup and make sure the rider's count matches yours.
  6. Send the customer a message with the expected delivery time and tracking link if available.
  7. Update your order status to show the order is on its way.

At the end of each week, match your payouts with your delivered orders. Every delivered parcel should appear in a payout, and every returned parcel should be back on your shelf.

Common mistakes sellers make with couriers

  • Choosing only on the lowest delivery charge. A slightly cheaper courier with more returns or slower payout can cost you more.
  • Not testing before peak season. Try a courier with real parcels weeks before Eid or Puja, not during the rush.
  • Wrong COD amounts. A typo in the COD field means you collect the wrong amount, and it is hard to recover.
  • Ignoring returns. Not tracking returned parcels leads to lost stock and confusion.
  • Incomplete addresses. "Mirpur" alone isn't an address. Collect house, road, area and a landmark at checkout.
  • Using only one courier. If that courier has a problem in a busy week, all your deliveries stop.

Collecting complete addresses and the right delivery area is much easier with a proper checkout than in Messenger chats. That is one big reason sellers move from Facebook-only selling to a website, as explained in Facebook Page vs website for online business.

Frequently asked questions

Which courier service is best for online business in Bangladesh?

There is no single best courier for every shop. The right one depends on where your customers live, what you sell, how fast you need your cash, and how well the courier handles returns in your area. Many sellers open accounts with two couriers and send each parcel with whichever performs better for that district.

Do I need a trade license to open a courier merchant account?

Many couriers let small sellers sign up with a phone number, NID and a payout account, and some ask for a trade license or business details as you grow. Requirements change, so check the courier's current sign-up page or ask their merchant support before you apply.

How does the courier pay me the cash on delivery money?

The courier collects cash from the customer, deducts its delivery and COD charges, and sends the balance to your bank account or mobile wallet on its payout schedule. Payout frequency differs between couriers and sometimes between account types, so ask about it when you sign up.

What happens when a customer refuses the parcel?

The courier marks it as returned and sends it back to you, usually after a few delivery attempts or calls. Most couriers charge something for returned parcels, so check the return charge and how long returns take to reach you.

Can I use more than one courier at the same time?

Yes, and many growing shops do. Using two couriers lets you compare real delivery times and return rates, gives you a backup during Eid rush, and lets you pick the courier that is strongest in each area.
