A shop called rupkotha.com sounds like a real brand. A shop at a long, shared address sounds like a side project. Your own domain makes your store easier to remember, easier to say in a Facebook Live, and more trustworthy to a first-time buyer.
The good news: you don't need to be technical. This guide explains how to connect a domain to your online store step by step, in plain words: how to choose a name, whether to pick .com or .com.bd, what DNS and A records actually are, how SSL works, how long it takes, and the mistakes that trip people up.
Why your online shop needs its own domain
A domain is your shop's permanent address on the internet. It brings real benefits:
- Easy to remember and share. "Order from rupkotha.com" works on a sticker, a live video or a phone call.
- Trust. Shoppers often feel safer ordering from a shop with its own domain.
- It belongs to you. If you ever change platforms, you keep the same address and point it to the new store, so your links, ads and printed packaging still work.
- Professional email. You can later set up an email like orders@yourshop.com.
You don't need one on day one, though. Many sellers launch on a free address first, then connect a domain once orders start coming in.
Choosing and buying your domain
Before you connect anything, you need a domain. This part takes three small decisions.
Step 1: Choose a good domain name
Spend 20 minutes on this; you'll use the name for years.
- Match your Facebook Page name so existing customers recognise you.
- Keep it short. Two words or fewer is ideal.
- Easy to spell when said aloud. If you have to spell it out on the phone ("r-u-p, no, p-h"), it's too hard.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers. "rupkotha-fashion-bd24.com" is hard to remember and easy to mistype.
- Avoid other brands' names. Using a famous brand's name in your domain can cause legal trouble.
- Check social handles too. Ideally your domain, Facebook Page and Instagram all use the same name.
If your first choice is taken, try small variations: add "shop", "bd" or your product type, for example rupkothashop.com or rupkothasaree.com.
Step 2: .com vs .com.bd, which should you pick?
Both are good choices for a Bangladeshi shop. Here's how they differ in practice.
| .com | .com.bd | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | International registry; sold by many registrars worldwide | The .bd registry run by BTCL (Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited), sold through BTCL and its authorised resellers |
| What it signals | Familiar, global | Clearly a Bangladeshi business |
| Buying process | Usually instant online | Application with identity documents; processing can take from a day to several working days |
| Documents | Usually none beyond your contact details | Typically a national ID or passport for individuals; businesses may be asked for company or trade documents |
| Payment | Card or local reseller | Local reseller or BTCL, paid in Taka |
A few practical notes on .com.bd:
- It goes through BTCL. BTCL manages .bd domains. Most sellers buy through an authorised reseller (many Bangladeshi hosting companies are), who submits the application for you.
- Documents. Expect to provide identity proof, such as your NID or passport. The registry can ask for proof of identity or business use, and a domain can be suspended if requested documents aren't supplied, so give accurate details.
- Timing varies. Some resellers activate quickly and let you upload documents afterwards; others wait for verification first. Ask your reseller how long it usually takes before you print anything with the new address.
- Fees change. Prices and registration terms are set by BTCL and resellers and change from time to time, so check the current price and renewal cost with your reseller before paying.
Step 3: Buy the domain from a registrar
A registrar (or reseller) is the company you buy and renew the domain from. For a .com there are many international registrars and Bangladeshi hosting companies that resell domains. For .com.bd, use BTCL or one of its authorised resellers.
When you buy:
- Register it in your own name, with your email and phone number, not a developer's or friend's.
- Make sure you get the login to the registrar's control panel. You'll need it to change DNS settings.
- Turn on auto-renewal or set a reminder. If a domain expires, your store goes offline, and someone else could register the name.
- Ignore upsells you don't need. You don't need to buy hosting or a website builder from the registrar if your store platform already hosts your site.
- Check the renewal price, not just the first-year offer.
What DNS and A records mean (in plain words)
This is the part that sounds scary but isn't.
DNS (Domain Name System) is the internet's phone book. When someone types yourshop.com, their phone asks DNS, "Where does yourshop.com live?" and DNS answers with the address of the computer (server) that holds your store.
DNS records are the entries in that phone book. You add them in your registrar's control panel, usually under a section called "DNS", "DNS management" or "Manage zone". The main types you'll meet:
- A record: points your domain to a server's numeric address (an IP address, like four numbers separated by dots). Think of it as "yourshop.com lives at this street number".
- CNAME record: points one name to another name, for example "www.yourshop.com is the same as this other address". Often used for the www version.
- TXT record: a short piece of text, sometimes used to prove you own the domain.
Each record has a type (A, CNAME, TXT), a name or host (often "@" for the main domain, or "www"), and a value (where it points). Your store platform tells you exactly what to enter. Your job is to copy it carefully.
Nameservers are a different setting: they decide which company's DNS is in charge of your domain. Usually you leave the registrar's default nameservers alone and just add records there.
SSL and HTTPS: the padlock in the browser
SSL is what turns http:// into https:// and shows a padlock in the browser. It encrypts the connection between the customer and your store, so phone numbers and addresses aren't sent in plain text. Browsers show warnings on sites without it, which scares buyers away.
You don't need to buy a separate SSL certificate when your store platform includes it. On EasyMall, SSL is issued automatically and free as soon as your domain is connected and verified. On self-hosted sites, you may need to set it up through your hosting provider.
How to connect a domain to your online store, step by step
Here's how the whole process works with EasyMall. Other hosted builders follow a similar pattern, so the steps will feel familiar wherever you build your store.
- Sign up and set up your store. Your store goes live on a free address like yourshop.easymall.app. Add products and set delivery charges first, so the store is ready when the domain starts working.
- Buy your domain from any registrar or reseller (.com, .com.bd or another ending).
- Open the domain settings in your EasyMall dashboard and enter the domain you bought, for example rupkotha.com.
- Copy the DNS records EasyMall shows you. Note the type, name and value of each one.
- Log in to your registrar and open the DNS management page for the domain.
- Add the records exactly as shown. Remove any old records with the same name that point elsewhere (such as a registrar's "parked" page), because they conflict.
- Save and wait. EasyMall checks your DNS automatically. Once it sees the correct records, it connects the domain and sets up SSL for you, free.
- Test it. Open your domain on your phone using mobile data, and on a computer. Check that the padlock shows and that products and checkout work.
- Update your links. Change the link in your Facebook Page, Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile and ads to the new domain.
Your old easymall.app address keeps working, so links you've already shared won't break.
How long does it take? (DNS propagation)
After you add records, the change has to spread across DNS servers around the world. This is called propagation. Usually it takes from a few minutes to a few hours. In some cases, it can take up to 24 to 48 hours, because internet providers keep old answers saved for a while.
During this time, the domain may work on your Wi-Fi but not on mobile data, or vice versa. That's normal. If it still doesn't work after 48 hours, there's almost always a typo or a conflicting record.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Typos in the value. One wrong digit in an A record sends visitors nowhere. Copy and paste instead of typing.
- Leaving old records in place. Registrars often add a default A record pointing to a parking page. If two A records exist for the same name, visitors may land on the wrong place.
- Putting the full domain in the name field. Many panels add your domain automatically. Typing "yourshop.com" in the name box can create "yourshop.com.yourshop.com". Use "@" or "www" as instructed.
- Changing nameservers by mistake. Unless told to, don't change nameservers; just add records.
- Forgetting the www version. Make sure both yourshop.com and www.yourshop.com work if your platform supports both.
- Letting the domain expire. Your store goes offline and you might lose the name. Turn on auto-renewal.
- Registering in someone else's name. If a developer or friend owns it, you don't truly own your shop's address.
- Panicking after an hour. Give propagation time before changing things again.
What to do after your domain is live
Once your store opens on your own domain, put it to work:
- Add it to your Facebook Page, pinned posts and ad links. Our guide on Facebook Page vs website explains how to use both together.
- Print it on packaging, stickers and receipts.
- Make sure product names and descriptions are clear so pages can appear in Google. See how to write product descriptions that sell.
- If you're still building the store, follow our guide on how to create an e-commerce website in Bangladesh, or read how to choose an e-commerce platform.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose .com or .com.bd for my online shop?
Both work well. A .com is quicker to buy and familiar worldwide, while a .com.bd clearly signals a Bangladeshi business but is registered through BTCL's system and usually involves identity documents and some processing time. Many shops buy the one they can get first, and some later buy both and point them to the same store.
How long does it take for a new domain to start working?
After you add the DNS records, the change usually spreads within minutes to a few hours, but it can take up to 24 to 48 hours in some places. If your store still isn't showing after two days, double-check the records for typos.
Do I need to buy an SSL certificate for my store?
Not if your platform includes it. With EasyMall, SSL (HTTPS) is set up automatically and free once your domain is connected. On self-hosted sites, you may need to set it up yourself, often with a free certificate from your hosting provider.
Will my old store address stop working after I connect a domain?
On EasyMall, no. Your free yourshop.easymall.app address keeps working, so old links shared on Facebook or WhatsApp still open your store.
Can I connect a domain I bought from any registrar?
Yes. As long as you can log in to your domain's DNS settings, you can add the records your store platform gives you. It doesn't matter which registrar or reseller you bought it from.
