Picking the wrong platform is one of the most expensive mistakes a new online shop can make. Not because of the price tag, but because of the months lost to a site that is hard to edit, doesn't fit how Bangladeshi customers buy, or depends on a developer who stops answering the phone.
This guide won't tell you there is one best ecommerce platform in Bangladesh for everyone, because there isn't. Instead, it explains the four main ways to sell online, the Bangladesh-specific features your platform must handle, the questions to ask before you pay, and the red flags to walk away from.
The four ways to build an online store in Bangladesh
Every option falls into one of four groups. Each fits a different kind of business.
1. Custom development (agency or freelancer)
A developer or agency builds a website just for you, from scratch or from their own framework.
- Good for: established brands with specific needs, large catalogues, special integrations or a design that must be unique.
- Watch out for: a high one-time cost, plus ongoing hosting, maintenance and fixes. Every change, even a new banner, may need the developer. If they disappear, you may be stuck with code nobody else understands.
2. WordPress with WooCommerce
WordPress is free, open-source website software, and WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns it into a shop. You need to buy hosting and a domain, then install a theme and plugins.
- Good for: sellers who are comfortable with technology, or who have someone on the team who is, and want lots of flexibility.
- Watch out for: you are responsible for hosting, backups, security and updates. Plugins sometimes conflict after updates. Features like delivery zones, Bangla fonts, SMS and courier connections depend on extra plugins whose quality varies, and some premium themes and plugins charge yearly fees.
3. Hosted store builders
A company runs the software and hosting for you, and you pay a subscription. You sign up, pick a design, add products and start selling. Some are global, some are built for Bangladesh.
- Good for: most small and medium sellers, especially Facebook sellers moving to a website for the first time.
- Watch out for: global builders may not handle cash on delivery, Taka, or inside and outside Dhaka delivery charges the way local customers expect. Check what is included in each plan, and whether you can export your data if you leave.
4. Marketplaces like Daraz
A marketplace is a big shared shop where many sellers list products. Daraz is the best-known example in Bangladesh.
- Good for: reaching shoppers who are already on the marketplace looking to buy, without building any website.
- Watch out for: you follow the marketplace's rules on pricing, returns and listings, and you pay commissions and fees. You compete side by side with other sellers on the same page, and the customer mostly belongs to the marketplace, not to you.
Quick comparison of the options
| Custom site | WordPress + WooCommerce | Hosted store builder | Marketplace (Daraz) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Weeks to months | Days to weeks | Hours to a day | Days (seller approval) |
| Upfront cost | High | Low to medium | Low (often free trial) | Low |
| Ongoing cost | Hosting and developer fees | Hosting, renewals, paid plugins | Monthly or yearly plan | Commissions and fees |
| Technical skill needed | None, but you rely on developer | Medium | Low | Low |
| Editing yourself | Depends on how it's built | Yes, with learning | Yes | Listings only |
| Your brand and customer list | Fully yours | Fully yours | Yours | Mostly the marketplace's |
| Who handles security and updates | You or developer | You | The platform | The marketplace |
For a new or growing f-commerce seller, the usual sweet spot is a hosted builder that is built for local needs, sometimes combined with a marketplace listing for extra reach.
Bangladesh-specific requirements checklist
Whatever you choose, make sure it handles how people in Bangladesh actually shop. Go through this checklist before you commit.
Payments and checkout
- Cash on delivery works out of the box, because it is still how most customers pay.
- Prices in Taka (৳), shown properly, with a sale price and old price option.
- A checkout that asks for name, mobile number and full address, and checks that the phone number is a valid Bangladeshi number (01 followed by 9 digits).
- Online payments (bKash, Nagad, cards) available now or on the roadmap, for when you want advance payments.
Delivery
- Delivery charges by area, at least Inside Dhaka and Outside Dhaka, shown to the customer before they confirm.
- An optional free delivery above a certain amount, for example free delivery on orders over ৳2,000.
- Courier integration with services like Steadfast, Pathao or RedX, either now or planned, so you can book parcels without copying addresses by hand.
Language and mobile
- Your store displays Bangla text cleanly, for product names, descriptions and banners.
- The store is built for mobile first. Open the demo on your own phone, on mobile data, and see how fast it loads.
Orders and stock
- An orders list with clear statuses (pending, confirmed, delivered, cancelled, returned) and search by phone number.
- Stock that updates automatically when someone orders, and comes back when an order is cancelled or returned.
Domain and ownership
- You can connect your own domain (.com or .com.bd), and SSL (HTTPS) is included.
- The domain stays registered in your name, not the developer's or platform's.
- You can export your products and orders if you ever leave.
Support
- Support is available in Bangla or English, at hours that suit Bangladesh, through channels you actually use (phone, WhatsApp, Messenger, email).
- There are guides or videos for common tasks, so you don't wait for help on simple things.
Questions to ask before you choose
Whether you're talking to an agency, a freelancer or a builder's sales team, ask these questions and write down the answers.
- What is the total cost for the first year, including hosting, domain, plugins, renewals and any transaction fees?
- What does each change cost? If I want to add a banner or change a price, can I do it myself?
- Does it support cash on delivery and Inside Dhaka / Outside Dhaka delivery charges without extra development?
- Who owns the domain, the design and the data? Can I export products, customers and orders?
- What happens if I stop paying or want to leave?
- How do you handle security, backups and SSL?
- Which courier and payment integrations are live today, and which are only planned?
- How fast is support, and how do I reach you during Eid or a big sale when something breaks?
- Can I see live stores using this platform, and try a free trial before paying?
Red flags to walk away from
- The domain is registered in the developer's name. If you fall out, you could lose your web address. Always insist the domain is in your name, with login access.
- "Unlimited everything" for a suspiciously low one-time price, with no clear answer about hosting, updates or who fixes problems later.
- No demo or trial. You should be able to see and test what you're buying.
- Every small change is a paid request. You'll end up paying again and again for things you could do yourself.
- No HTTPS. Browsers warn visitors on sites without SSL, which hurts trust.
- Features described only as "possible". If cash on delivery or delivery zones "can be built", they're not there yet. Ask what is live today.
- No way to export your data. Your product list and customer history are your business. Don't lock them away.
- Slow on mobile data. Most of your customers are on phones, often outside Dhaka on slower connections.
Matching the platform to your stage
A few clearly hypothetical examples help make this concrete.
A new saree page in Mirpur with 30 products and 5 to 10 orders a day mostly needs speed and simplicity: a store builder with COD, delivery charges and easy editing. A custom site would be money spent before the business is proven.
A gadget shop in Chattogram with a few hundred products might want a store builder or WooCommerce with good categories and stock tracking, and could also list best-sellers on Daraz to reach marketplace buyers.
An established clothing brand with several outlets, a warehouse system and its own tech team might justify custom development or a heavily customised WooCommerce setup.

Common mistakes when choosing a platform
- Choosing on price alone. The cheapest option can cost the most once you count lost orders and fixing problems.
- Overbuilding at the start. You don't need a mobile app, loyalty points and ten payment methods to sell your first 100 orders.
- Ignoring how orders reach you. The real work is in orders, stock and delivery. Look at the seller dashboard, not just the storefront.
- Forgetting delivery. Make sure the platform fits your courier plan. Our guide to choosing a courier service covers this side.
- Not reading the cancellation terms. Know how to leave before you join.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best e-commerce platform for a small business in Bangladesh?
There is no single best platform for everyone. For most small Facebook sellers, a hosted store builder that supports Taka, cash on delivery and inside or outside Dhaka delivery charges is the easiest start. Larger brands with special needs may prefer WordPress with WooCommerce or a custom-built site.
Should I sell on Daraz or build my own website?
Many sellers do both. A marketplace like Daraz brings buyers who are already shopping, but you follow its rules, share revenue through commissions and fees, and the customer relationship belongs mostly to the marketplace. Your own website builds your brand and customer list. Starting on one and adding the other later is common.
Is WordPress with WooCommerce good for Bangladesh?
It can be, if you or someone on your team is comfortable managing hosting, plugins, updates and security. It is very flexible, but local features like delivery zones, Bangla text and courier connections depend on which plugins and theme you choose and how well they are maintained.
Can I move to another platform later?
Usually yes, but it takes work. Before you choose, ask whether you can export your products, customers and orders, and make sure the domain is registered in your own name so you can point it to a new platform if needed.
Do I need online payment from day one?
Not necessarily. Most Bangladeshi shoppers still pay cash on delivery, so a good COD checkout matters more at the start. Online payment through bKash, Nagad or cards becomes more useful as you grow and want advance payments for high-value or outside-Dhaka orders.
